There's a narrative gaining traction in research circles that I've come to deeply distrust: the idea that science moves too slowly, and that acceleration is both possible and desirable. It sounds reasonable. It even sounds noble. But this trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.

The pitch is familiar. We face urgent problems. Climate data suggests we need rapid solutions. Disease timelines don't wait for peer review. So the argument goes: traditional research cycles are outdated relics, and we need to compress years into months, skepticism into speed.

Look at the aerospace sector. When we see headlines about pushing structural limits on aircraft designs, the implicit message is clear: move faster, test bigger, prove bolder. The same acceleration doctrine appears across research domains. From genomics to materials science, there's constant pressure to shortcut the methodical process that once defined serious inquiry.

Here's my concern: we're conflating urgency with wisdom.

The glacial pace of traditional research wasn't invented by committees trying to waste time. It emerged because the human brain is terrible at catching its own mistakes. Peer review isn't bureaucratic theater. Replication isn't redundant. Long review cycles aren't obstacles to overcome but features that protect us from acting confidently on bad data.

Yes, we face real emergencies. Those smoky skies across North America didn't materialize because someone was too careful with climate research. Coastal erosion in places like Maine isn't accelerating because scientists were too methodical. These problems are urgent precisely because we didn't act quickly enough on the research we already had. That's not an argument for faster research. It's an argument for actually listening to the research we've done.

The "faster science" pitch creates a false choice. Either we maintain traditional timelines and fail to address crises, or we accelerate and risk catastrophic mistakes. But there's a third option: we could simply fund and staff existing research properly instead of treating acceleration as a substitute for resources.

When researchers have adequate funding, they move faster naturally. When we maintain rigorous methods while removing bureaucratic bloat, studies progress without sacrificing rigor. We don't need to choose between speed and accuracy. We need to choose between adequately supporting research or pretending that lowering our standards accomplishes what proper funding would.

The acceleration narrative also conveniently absolves policy makers and institutions from harder accountability. Instead of asking why we didn't act on climate research from decades ago, we get to discuss how researchers need to be faster next time. Instead of examining why funding gets pulled and researchers leave the field, we debate methods of compression.

This is particularly galling in fields like climate and environmental science, where the research has been remarkably consistent for years. We don't need faster climate science. We need political will. Treating the problem as a research speed issue misdiagnoses the actual problem.

I'm not arguing for stagnation. Efficiency matters. Bad incentive structures deserve reform. Publishing delays that serve no scientific purpose should be eliminated. But those are different arguments than "we need to move faster fundamentally."

The researchers who gave us reliable information about everything from atmospheric CO2 to wildfire behavior weren't slow because they lacked ambition. They were methodical because the stakes were high. That instinct is worth preserving, even as we make smart improvements to the system.

Before accepting that faster science is inevitable, ask what we're accelerating past: the peer review that catches errors? The replication that confirms findings? The careful thinking that prevents confident mistakes?

Sometimes the original pace exists for good reasons.
