NASA has selected a successor mission to CAPSTONE, the pathfinder spacecraft that validated a unique lunar orbit before the agency's crewed Artemis missions. The new mission, CAPSTONE 02, will continue characterizing the near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO) that NASA plans to use as a staging point for lunar exploration.
CAPSTONE, a briefcase-sized spacecraft launched in 2022, successfully demonstrated that the NRHO is stable and navigable for long-term operations. This elongated lunar orbit passes within 1,600 kilometers of the Moon's south pole at its closest approach, positioning it as an ideal location for a planned lunar gateway station that will support Artemis astronauts traveling to the lunar surface.
CAPSTONE 02 will expand on this validation work by operating longer in the NRHO and conducting additional trajectory maintenance experiments. The mission will gather data on fuel consumption, orbital dynamics, and communications reliability over an extended duration. This information directly informs the design of the Gateway, the crewed outpost NASA will construct in lunar orbit as part of the Artemis program.
The selection represents NASA's commitment to methodical lunar infrastructure development. Rather than proceeding directly to crewed operations, the agency uses robotic precursor missions to de-risk complex orbital mechanics and logistics. CAPSTONE's success demonstrated that the NRHO requires less fuel to maintain than traditional circular lunar orbits, reducing long-term operational costs for the Gateway and supporting missions.
CAPSTONE 02 builds on lessons learned from the original mission while testing systems and procedures that the Gateway itself will eventually employ. The successor mission strengthens NASA's foundation for sustainable lunar exploration, moving the agency closer to establishing a permanent human presence near the Moon.
