Let's be direct about what's happening in orbit right now. SpaceX is positioning itself as the solution to a problem it helped create, and the space industry is letting it happen.

The recent news that NASA and SpaceX are "studying" how to prevent future upper stage lunar collisions is telling. It's not a commitment to change operational practices. It's a study. A conversation starter. Meanwhile, SpaceX continues launching at a pace that makes debris management an afterthought rather than a design requirement.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: the industry is rewarding velocity over accountability.

SpaceX has built an impressive business model on doing things faster and cheaper than competitors. That's not inherently wrong. Competition drives innovation. But when that speed comes with an implicit acceptance of orbital debris risks, we're witnessing a market failure dressed up as progress.

The company's recent mission to extend the life of aging satellites is emblematic. SpaceX pitches itself as the responsible actor, the company that can reach satellites others can't, keeping them operational rather than letting them become junk. Noble messaging. But this same company operates launch cadences that create the orbital congestion these servicing missions must navigate.

We're being sold a narrative where SpaceX is both the problem solver and the problem creator, and it gets rewarded for both roles.

The financial incentives are perverse. SpaceX makes money on launches. More launches mean more revenue. The company also stands to make money on satellite servicing missions. So the system rewards both the activity that creates debris risk and the service that manages it. This is classic rent-seeking behavior wrapped in the language of space innovation.

Other countries notice this asymmetry. China's recent orbital activities, including its next-gen relay satellite launches, happen within a different regulatory framework. The U.S. space industry loves to criticize China's approach as opaque, and that's fair. But at least there's acknowledgment that orbital activities have consequences that need to be managed at a policy level.

The Space Force's laser communications contracts, like the K2 Space award, hint at where actual technological progress should focus. On-orbit servicing capabilities, debris removal systems, and advanced tracking infrastructure. These are the technologies that could actually mitigate risk. But they're not the technologies generating headlines or driving the venture capital money that makes SpaceX's valuation possible.

Here's what concerns me most: the industry structure rewards companies for solving the immediate, visible problems (getting satellites to orbit, fixing broken ones) while creating externalities (debris, collision risk, congestion) that everyone else pays for. SpaceX benefits from the launch revenue. The rest of the space community manages the consequences.

SpaceX will argue, correctly, that it operates within regulatory bounds. The company pays attention to debris guidelines. It coordinates with tracking agencies. These are baseline responsibilities, not virtues.

But baseline responsibility shouldn't be confused with leadership. And profitable innovation shouldn't be confused with responsible stewardship.

The space industry should ask itself harder questions about what behavior it's incentivizing. When a company can grow to trillion-dollar valuations partly because it operates at scales that create problems only it can afford to solve, something in the incentive structure is broken.

We can appreciate SpaceX's engineering accomplishments without pretending the current trajectory serves the long-term health of the orbital environment. We can acknowledge that rapid iteration has value without accepting that risk externalization is an acceptable business model.

The conversation about lunar collisions is important. But it shouldn't replace a conversation about whether we've structured space commerce in a way that makes those collisions inevitable.
