There's a narrative taking hold in space policy circles that we are witnessing an unstoppable revolution in space infrastructure. We're told that commercial satellite networks will inevitably replace government systems, that lunar logistics hubs are the obvious next step, and that competition will drive costs down forever. This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.

Don't misunderstand. Real progress is happening. Companies are launching satellites at unprecedented rates. NASA is genuinely pursuing partnerships that didn't exist a decade ago. But the leap from "things are changing rapidly" to "this particular outcome is predetermined" is where the reasoning breaks down.

Look at the actual track record. We've watched satellite constellations face repeated setbacks. We've seen commercial ventures require government subsidies to survive. We've observed how quickly "disruptive" space startups become dependent on the very institutions they claimed to make obsolete. Yet the narrative keeps insisting the arc bends inevitably toward a certain vision of the future.

The current enthusiasm around commercial lunar infrastructure is a perfect case study. Yes, NASA is supporting these efforts. Yes, private companies are building systems. But this doesn't mean the model will work at scale, that costs will actually decrease as promised, or that commercial operators will maintain profitability without perpetual government contracts. History suggests otherwise. The Space Shuttle was supposed to make spaceflight routine and cheap. It didn't.

What makes this inevitability narrative so persistent? It's partly because certain outcomes are genuinely desirable, so we assume they're inevitable. It's partly because venture capital and defense budgets flow toward those who speak with confidence about the future. And it's partly because complexity gets flattened into simple stories.

The infrastructure that's actually replacing older systems often succeeds for unglamorous reasons: it's more reliable, or it solves a specific problem better, or the timing was right. Not because someone charted a predetermined path and the market simply followed it.

Consider the recent spectrum approvals for satellite navigation networks, or the shifts we're seeing in GEO satellite businesses. These are real developments. But they're also contingent ones. They depend on regulatory decisions that could change. They depend on technical challenges being solved (not guaranteed). They depend on sustained funding and political will. Call that obvious, but it's worth emphasizing because the current conversation often skips over these dependencies.

There's also the question of scale and timeline. Yes, things move faster in space than they used to. But "faster" is relative. A technology proving viable in 2024 doesn't guarantee commercial viability by 2027, or even 2032. The gap between demonstration and deployment remains vast. So does the gap between deployment and profitability.

The smarter take isn't that commercial space infrastructure won't expand significantly. It likely will. The smarter take is that we don't actually know which ventures succeed, which get acquired, which pivot into something unrecognizable, and which quietly fail. We don't know whether costs follow the optimistic curves being projected. We don't know whether government contracting remains the primary revenue source indefinitely.

Uncertainty isn't failure. But pretending uncertainty doesn't exist is its own kind of failure.

The space industry needs genuine skepticism from outside voices, not because the industry is doing something wrong, but because capital and conviction flow too easily toward bold predictions. Someone needs to ask: what could go wrong? Which assumptions are being tested? What do we actually know versus what we're hoping?

That's not contrarianism for its own sake. It's the kind of scrutiny that might actually help identify which trends are truly transformative versus which ones are temporary ripples in a much longer story.
