NASA's Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission has demonstrated the ability to forecast solar storm arrivals with unprecedented precision. In an initial test, continuous imagery from PUNCH predicted when a solar eruption would reach Earth to within 30 minutes, a dramatic improvement over current forecasting capabilities.

The achievement represents a major advance in space weather prediction. Solar eruptions, or coronal mass ejections, can disrupt power grids, damage satellites, and endanger astronauts. Current warning systems typically offer only 12 to 24 hours of notice. PUNCH's continuous observation of the corona and solar wind extends forecasting windows and sharpens arrival time estimates.

PUNCH observes the Sun's outer atmosphere and tracks how plasma and magnetic fields propagate outward through space. Unlike previous solar instruments that captured snapshots, PUNCH provides uninterrupted imaging of coronal mass ejections as they travel toward Earth. This continuous data stream allows scientists to measure eruption speed and trajectory in real time, then calculate precise arrival times at Earth's orbit.

The mission launched in 2023 as a collaborative effort between NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Four spacecraft work in concert to provide overlapping views of the corona and heliosphere, the region of space dominated by the Sun's magnetic field and solar wind.

The results were presented Tuesday at the Committee on Space Research Scientific Meeting and are currently under review at the journal Space Weather.
