Voyager Space is pushing NASA to ease technical requirements in its commercial space station request for proposals, arguing that relaxed standards would accelerate development of successor platforms to the International Space Station.

The company, which is developing Starlab alongside Nanoracks and Airbus, submitted feedback to NASA's RFP for commercial low-Earth orbit destinations. Voyager contends that overly prescriptive specifications increase costs and timelines for private station operators who must compete in a demanding market.

NASA issued the RFP to solicit proposals from commercial companies building orbital facilities that could replace ISS operations after the station reaches end of life around 2030. The agency aims to transition cargo and crew missions from government-owned infrastructure to privately operated platforms, reducing its direct role in human spaceflight while maintaining U.S. presence in orbit.

Voyager's position reflects broader industry tensions between NASA's requirements and commercial realities. Companies developing Starlab, Axiom Station, and Orbital Reef face competing pressures to meet government specifications while managing development costs.
