NASA and Russia's space agency Roscosmos have extended their seat-sharing agreement for crewed missions to the International Space Station, continuing a partnership that began in the 1990s. The arrangement allows both agencies to exchange crew seats on their respective spacecraft, ensuring continuous human presence aboard the orbiting laboratory.

Under the agreement, NASA astronauts fly on Russian Soyuz vehicles while Roscosmos cosmonauts travel aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule. This reciprocal system provides redundancy and reduces costs for both agencies. The extension reflects the two nations' commitment to station operations despite geopolitical tensions elsewhere.

Crew Dragon, developed under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, has flown multiple crewed missions since 2020. The spacecraft carries four crew members compared to Soyuz's three, allowing NASA flexibility in crew composition and scheduling. Russian cosmonauts have integrated into SpaceX missions since the arrangement formalized, with several having completed flights aboard Crew Dragon.

The seat-barter framework remains one of the most stable elements of U.S.-Russian space cooperation. While diplomatic relations have deteriorated on Earth, both nations recognize that station operations require reliable transportation and crew exchanges. NASA has invested billions in commercial partnerships with SpaceX and Boeing to reduce dependence on Russian vehicles, yet the seat-sharing agreement persists because it serves both parties' operational needs.

The ISS entered orbit in 1998 and has operated continuously with rotating crews ever since.
