Everyone celebrates human ingenuity, institutional trust, and the romance of space exploration.
It's all genuinely inspiring. But inspiration can be comfortable. And comfort can obscure the real tension that's building in human spaceflight.
Let's be clear about what we're seeing: NASA is deliberately choosing to put more control in human hands rather than automation systems. This isn't a regression to some primitive era of space exploration. It's a deliberate philosophical choice at the moment when automation technology could feasibly handle most of what pilots do. That choice matters.
The obvious take is that this represents confidence in human capability, the irreplaceable judgment of experienced astronauts, the wisdom of trusting expertise. All true. But the better question is what this choice reveals about the future we're NOT choosing.
Every dollar spent on training pilots for manual Orion control is a dollar not spent on something else.
