The space industry is intoxicated with velocity. Every week brings news of another facility expanding its pad capacity, another company announcing an aggressive manifest, another promise to turn launch into something as routine as commercial aviation.

We're told this is progress. We're told faster is better. We're told that the only path forward is through relentless acceleration.

Here's my unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy here.

Consider what's happening across the launch landscape. Facilities like Wallops are gearing up for increased activity. Companies are planning new infrastructure. The industry narrative is one of unstoppable momentum. Everyone wants to be the fastest, the most responsive, the most capable of getting payloads to orbit on demand.

But momentum without wisdom is just recklessness with better marketing.

The infrastructure argument alone deserves scrutiny. Building launch facilities is expensive and time-intensive. Environmental reviews take years for good reason. Range operations require coordination between military, civilian, and private entities. Safety protocols exist because rockets are complex machines that sometimes fail catastrophically.

When companies prioritize launch cadence above all else, something has to give. Usually, it's the unglamorous stuff: the careful engineering reviews, the iterative testing, the built-in margin for error. Speed culture doesn't tolerate redundancy. It treats caution as inefficiency.

The recent expansion announcements suggest the industry believes demand will grow infinitely. But demand forecasts in space are notoriously unreliable. We've seen this movie before. Remember when satellite internet would revolutionize global connectivity within five years? The technology is real, but adoption curves are flatter than expected. We're potentially building launch capacity for a future that may not materialize as predicted.

There's also the question of what gets launched first when you're optimizing for speed. The answer is usually commercial payloads with the highest margins. Scientific missions, government projects with longer development cycles, and experimental payloads get pushed to the back of the line. We risk creating a launch industry optimized for what's profitable today, not what's necessary for long-term space sustainability or scientific progress.

Then there's the sustainability angle, which often gets overlooked in launch enthusiasm. More launches mean more debris, more atmospheric impact, more rangeland and coastal area disruption. The space industry likes to tout its environmental consciousness, but there's an inherent tension between maximizing launch frequency and minimizing environmental impact. We haven't resolved that tension. We've just chosen to ignore it in pursuit of growth metrics.

The companies pushing for expanded capacity will argue that restraint means falling behind competitors. They're not wrong about the competitive pressure. But competition isn't automatically beneficial when the entire industry is competing on the same unsustainable axis.

What would a smarter approach look like? Start by being honest about actual demand rather than speculative demand. Build infrastructure deliberately, not frantically. Invest in reusability and safety infrastructure rather than just adding pads. Accept that some quarters might have fewer launches than others, and that's okay.

Most provocatively, maybe we should ask whether launch capacity is actually the constraining factor for the space industry's growth. Perhaps what we really need is better decision-making about what gets launched and why, not just the ability to launch more frequently.

The space industry has momentum. That's valuable. But momentum without direction is just noise. Right now, we're building for speed without asking whether speed is actually what we need.

Sometimes the brave choice isn't to accelerate. Sometimes it's to pause, breathe, and make sure we're building the space future we actually want.
