The consensus among space enthusiasts is crystallizing fast: humanity's return to the moon is inevitable, necessary, and fundamentally good. NASA is deploying instruments. Private companies are racing to land. Nations are staking claims. The narrative writes itself: we're going back, we're staying this time, and that's progress.

But this comfortable storyline obscures something more uncomfortable. The real question isn't whether we'll build lunar infrastructure. It's whether we can actually sustain it without creating a permanent mess that haunts us for centuries.

Most moon base discussions treat permanence as the goal, as though establishing a foothold is the hard part and everything after flows naturally. This gets the problem backward. Putting humans on the moon for extended periods creates a fundamentally different set of challenges than visiting it did fifty years ago. And we're not adequately preparing for what breaks when we shift from "expedition" to "settlement."

Start with the obvious constraint: the moon has no weather service, no emergency room, no supply chain. Any permanent lunar operation depends on either perfect redundancy in all critical systems or regular resupply missions that cost astronomical sums. The engineering is solvable in theory. But theory meets reality when the first life-support malfunction happens at a base where the nearest help is three days away.

The harder constraint is regulatory and ethical. We have the Outer Space Treaty, written in 1967 for a world that assumed the moon would remain a rare destination. Now we're talking about multiple nations and private operators establishing permanent sites. Who resolves territorial disputes? What happens when equipment breaks down and companies want to abandon it? Who cleans up the hardware? The moon currently hosts debris from decades of exploration. Add permanent bases and you're not just adding equipment, you're creating infrastructure that could fail in ways we don't yet understand in lunar conditions.

Then there's the question that makes everyone uncomfortable: what are we actually there to do?

The stated rationale cycles through noble purposes: scientific research, resource extraction, a stepping stone to Mars. But none of these quite justifies the cost and complexity of permanent human settlement. Robots can do most pure science more safely and cheaper. Mining the moon remains economically speculative at best. And the "stepping stone" framing treats Earth's nearest neighbor as a waystation rather than a place worth understanding on its own terms.

This isn't an argument against returning to the moon. It's an argument that we're asking the wrong questions before we commit to permanence. We need to answer what permanent lunar settlement actually solves that other approaches don't. We need regulatory frameworks that can scale to multiple operators. We need honest accounting of the waste problem. We need to understand whether "because we can" is enough justification when the downstream costs are measured in centuries of orbital debris and environmental complexity.

The obvious consensus assumes that building the base is the hard part and success is measured by whether people are living there. The better question is what happens to our ability to use space responsibly once we normalize permanent settlement with inadequate governance and unclear purpose.

The moon isn't going anywhere. We can afford to ask difficult questions before we make it our second home.
