# Gemini 11's Altitude Record: A Milestone That Defined an Era of Spaceflight
On September 14, 1966, astronauts Pete Conrad and Richard Gordon aboard NASA's Gemini 11 spacecraft climbed to an altitude of 850 nautical miles (980 statute miles, or 1,574 kilometers) above Earth. That accomplishment set the crewed spaceflight altitude record for the planet. The record stood unbroken for 58 years, a testament to the audacious engineering of the Gemini program and the demands of human spaceflight in the 1960s.
Gemini 11 achieved this height by performing a rendezvous and docking with an Agena target vehicle in orbit, then firing the Agena's engine to raise the combined spacecraft to that extreme altitude. The maneuver demanded precision, fuel conservation, and flawless execution. Both elements worked. Conrad and Gordon rode the trajectory upward, crossed the altitude threshold that no crewed spacecraft had reached before, and returned to Earth safely on September 15.
The mission served multiple objectives. NASA needed to test crewed rendezvous and docking procedures. The agency needed to gather data on the radiation environment at high altitudes. Engineers wanted to study the behavior of tethered spacecraft in orbit. Gemini 11 accomplished all three. The two astronauts also conducted extravehicular activity (EVA), with Gordon performing spacewalk operations to test techniques and hardware that would later support Apollo lunar missions.
The 850-nautical-mile altitude placed Gemini 11 well beyond the altitude of low Earth orbit stations and well into a region dominated by the Van Allen radiation belts. The crew's instruments recorded radiation levels and effects on onboard systems. That data informed mission planning for Apollo and future deep-space exploration. Every kilogram of shielding, every radiation detector, and every operational procedure for long-duration spaceflight built on lessons from Gemini.
The record lasted until 2011. SpaceX's Crew Dragon, under NASA's Commercial Crew Program contract, carried astronauts to an altitude of 890 nautical miles during its Crew-2 mission. That flight, conducted 45 years after Gemini 11, demonstrated how commercial spacecraft operators now participate in advancing human spaceflight capabilities. The altitude record served the same purpose as the Gemini flights had: pushing the boundaries of human reach and gathering operational knowledge for future exploration.
Gemini 11 remains one of the most technically accomplished crewed missions in the program's two-year history. The Gemini program, which ran from 1961 to 1966, pioneered rendezvous and docking operations, spacewalking procedures, and long-duration crewed spaceflight. Without Gemini's decade of development and testing, the Apollo lunar landings would have faced far greater technical risk. Conrad and Gordon's 1966 flight epitomized the program's dual purpose: accomplish specific technical objectives while advancing human capability in space.
That 58-year record reflects not just the ambition of 1966 but also the interval required before commercial and government partners developed the capability to surpass it routinely.
