The James Webb Space Telescope observed water ice on 3I/ATLAS, the third interstellar object detected, discovered in July 2025. A team led by Dr. Silvia Protopapa of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Southwest Research Institute published findings in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The research compared water ice behavior on 3I/ATLAS to that observed on 2I/Borisov, the previous interstellar visitor detected in 2019. JWST's upgraded observational capabilities, unavailable during Borisov's passage, enabled detailed analysis of 3I/ATLAS's composition. The findings indicate water ice behaves consistently across different star systems.
